Gatewood is small three-bedroom brick ranches on flat sixty to seventy-five foot lots right up against the Nashville line, and almost every one of them is fenced. Chain link on the left, chain link on the right, chain link across the back, and no alley behind because the plat never included one.

So the tree is not the problem. A twenty inch water oak that took a limb off in a July storm is a straightforward grind on open ground. Here it sits behind a gate that measures thirty-four inches at the posts, with a clothesline pole and an air conditioner between it and the trunk.

That is why people on Janette Avenue and Marita Avenue get told no by outfits with one big machine on a trailer. It is also most of what we do in this neighborhood, and the answer is nearly always yes if you ask the right questions first.

The gate math, and when we pull a panel

Measure post to post, not panel to panel. A gate that looks three feet wide often opens to thirty-three or thirty-four inches once the hinge hardware and the latch post are in the way, and that inch is the whole decision.

Our compact grinder walks through anything from about thirty-four inches up. Below that, or where a hard right turn immediately inside the gate leaves no room to swing, we take a chain-link panel out. On this kind of fence that is genuinely simple: the ties get cut, the fabric rolls back or a rail section lifts, and it goes back the same afternoon looking like it did.

We do that at no charge on our own jobs because it is faster than fighting the machine. What we will not do is force a machine through an opening it does not fit and rip your fence fabric on the way past.

What the city line changes about a Gatewood grind

Gates Road and Hardaway Drive sit where Goodlettsville stops and Nashville begins, and the boundary runs through the middle of some of these blocks. It changes your school zoning, Gateway Elementary and Goodlettsville Middle feeding Hunters Lane, and it changes who picks up your brush.

It changes nothing about a stump grind. Same price, same schedule, same crew, whichever side of the line your mailbox is on. If a tree crew left rounds and brush at your curb, that is where it matters, because the pickup rules differ and the wrong pile can sit for a month.

We take the grindings with us when you want them gone, which sidesteps the whole question. We do not haul cut logs or limbs, that being a different service and a different truck.

Small lots, old stumps, and where the pile goes

The planting here is what you would expect from mid-century starter housing: water oak and silver maple for shade, hackberry that showed up on its own, and along the back fences chinaberry and volunteer mulberry that nobody planted and nobody wants.

Mulberry and chinaberry are soft, wet grinds that go fast and make a mess. The spoil stains, so it does not get raked toward a patio or a walk. Water oak is the slow one, dense enough that a big one in a back corner is a genuine afternoon.

On a lot this size the chip question answers itself. Grinding a two-foot oak in a thirty-foot back yard produces more material than the yard has anywhere to put, so most Gatewood jobs finish with the spoil on the trailer and the hole brought up with soil.
