A 1952 oak stump, eight feet off the foundation

This is the oldest continuously lived-in stock in town, most of it going up between 1949 and 1971 off Moss Trail, Alta Loma Road and South Dickerson Road. The trees went in with the houses, which means water oak and pin oak planted at what looked in 1952 like a sensible distance from a small brick ranch.

Seventy years on, those trunks are three feet through and the root system is under the front walk, under the driveway apron, and running along the sewer lateral because that is where the water is. When the tree comes down the stump is enormous and it is in the worst possible place, which is between the house and the street with everything buried around it.

Depth is set by what is buried, not by the machine

On an open lot we take a stump six to twelve inches under grade without thinking about it. In this neighborhood the honest answer is that depth depends on the pipe.

The sewer lateral from a 1950s house typically runs from a cleanout near the foundation out to the main under the street, shallow at the house and dropping as it goes. Oak roots follow it. Where the stump sits directly over that line we grind to a safe working depth, expose nothing, and leave the deeper roots to die and rot down on their own, which they will.

The state locate marks the utility-owned side and takes three working days. Nobody marks your lateral, your water line past the meter, or the old cast iron somebody abandoned in 1968 and never removed. If you have a plumber's camera report from a backup, that is the single most useful document you can show us, and yes, we do read them.

Sidewalks and aprons lifted by root

A lot of the heaves in this pocket are original concrete lifted by root over decades. Grinding does not put a slab back down, but it stops the lifting and gives a concrete crew something they can excavate.

Where the stump is in the strip between the walk and the street, we work off the street side wherever possible so the machine is not sitting on a lifted slab and rocking it further. Where it is between the walk and the house, we come across the lawn on boards.

We also keep the wheel back from the slab edge itself. Grinding right up against sixty-year-old concrete undermines it, and you can crack a panel that was doing fine. Six inches of standoff and a hand tool for the last bit is the right way to do that.

The species behind most stumps on these streets

Water oak and pin oak dominate, both dense and both hard on teeth after seven decades of grit in the bark. Silver maple turns up in the back yards with the plate you would expect. Hackberry is everywhere and grinds easily, which is a relief.

The two odd ones are the American elms that survived the blight, of which there are a handful still standing along the older lots, and the volunteer mulberry that comes up along fence lines and behind garages. Mulberry is soft, wet and stringy, it stains anything it touches, and the spoil goes on the trailer rather than into a bed near a driveway.

When a big oak comes out of a small yard, the volume of grindings genuinely will not fit back in the hole. Two to three times the space you would guess is the rule, and on a quarter-acre lot with beds all around it there is nowhere to hide it. Plan on hauling.

Rivergate traffic and where the grinder parks

Working this close to Rivergate Parkway and Vietnam Veterans Boulevard means traffic decides more than you would think. On the streets that feed the retail belt, a trailer at the curb at four in the afternoon is a bad idea for everyone, so we start early on those addresses and try to be loaded before the school and shift traffic builds.

On the interior streets it is a non-issue and we work whatever hours suit you. If you are on a corner or near a bus stop, mention it when you book and we will pick a start time that keeps the road clear.

Dry Creek runs along the west edge of this pocket, and the lots nearest it drain slower than the rest, which is worth mentioning if your yard is one of the low ones.
